Matera is an extremely unique city. Monument City, City Museum. It is speculated that Matera was the first historical settlement in Italy. First of all, it is the historical center of the city - Sasso. Sasso in translation means "stone", a feature of it is that all the houses here were built in the traditional way, and carved in natural tuff (soft limestone). The age of some of these inhabitants is 7 thousand years, which simply can not but impress.

The mother is truly impressive. And not just tourists. World-renowned filmmakers have chosen her location to shoot such well-known films as "The Gospel of Matthew," "King David," "Omen" and, on top, the high-profile "Passions of Christ."

Not long ago, it became known that Matera would win the title of European Capital of Culture in 2019.
