Common description
Lisbon is the westernmost capital of continental Europe. The city occupies an advantageous position on the southwestern coast of the Iberian Peninsula, on the west coast of the bay of Mar da Paglia, 15 km from the Atlantic Ocean. City districts stretch along the Lisbon coast, stretching from the river mouth to the beaches of Alentejo. Modern high-rise buildings of the metropolis closer to the outskirts are replaced by picturesque fishing huts, united in small villages. The surroundings of Lisbon are rich in vegetation, among which are: seaside pine, eucalyptus, evergreen shrubs (maquis).
